‘At this moment, I’m in São Tomé Island who was the first immigration wave from Cape Verde (my home country) and it was seen as the promised land for many families, included mine. As part of my 4 years visual research on Cape Verde exodus, I came driven by photographing the life and the routine of a village of Cape Verdeans who were squatters in a São Tomé's building for years and got displaced (forced migration) recently and sent to a new attempt of housings while they work in the coffee fields, earning the bare minimum wage, enough for survival. I found remnants of brutal African Historic debts being adapted in a new cultural and economic identity in San Thomé. and a naturalized path of life, where the beauty and descendants rituals still persist and resist.’ António Cruz
