The Warao, known as the ‘people of the water’ in their native language, have an ancestry of over eight thousand years on the banks of the Orinoco Delta in Venezuela. Recently, an economic crisis in their homeland forced these resilient people to seek refuge and new opportunities in Brazil. The emergency migration is an attempt at survival, motivated by the urgent need for food, work and access to health care. Amid the adversities they face in foreign lands, the Warao have demonstrated that, even far from their natural habitat, the ‘people of the water’ continue to sail against the current, with courage and determination.
